Endodontics - Root Canal Treatment

Endodontics (ROOT CANAL TREATMENT): When Dental Decay is not treated, it extends to the pulp tissue beneath that contains blood vessels and nerve, resulting in tooth pain. If further avoided, it involves the bone beneath and causes infection and pus which may also result in facial and gum swelling in some cases. Hence it is vital to get treatment for decayed or infected teeth without delay.

Root canal treatment steps involve removal of infected or decayed pulp tissue, providing intra canal dressing, followed by cleaning and shaping of the canal & finally by filling the root canal with an inert material such as guttapercha. Generally the procedure is done in 2 sittings and in select conditions a single visit root canal is performed, where all the above steps are done in a single appointment.

Upon this root canal treated tooth a cap is placed to provide strength.

A Cap or Crown such as a Zirconia or metal-ceramic (PFM) gives it the strength to bring back tooth function!

Zirconia or Zirconium crowns are becoming extremely popular with the population as they are metal free, have excellent tooth like form and shape, are light weight and have superior strength.

Certain conditions warrant the need for healthy tooth to undergo root canal, they include teeth that are to be grinded for bridge purpose, or teeth that have moved down or up and result in loss of tooth space when a patient has not replaced their teeth etc.
